. . .the temperature dropped a good 10 degrees (more like 30 by nightfall) and it was overcast in the loveliest way. I can't help but wish I spent it curled up on the couch in one of these, with hot chai and my current read. (Instead I was running all over town on errands, the highlight of which was taking this guy to the groomers').
Sigh. Fall is in the air and I am loooooooooving it. Bring on the tweed blazers, lacy tights and leather boots!

Tomorrow is a high of 66. I'm happy.

I must have still been coming down from the royal wedding high when Kate Moss got married last month - the pictures didn't really leave an impression. But I literally want to live inside this new pictorial inside the latest Vogue.
I'm not sure how it manages to give off a vibe of Victorian picnic and rocker-chic at the same time, but it does. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to pick wildflowers and frolic in the woods.

I loved reading that the dress code for the evening was actually silver and white. This girl knows how to make an entrance.

Eventually I'd love to share more photos with you of our new home in Philly, but give me a break kids, it's only been a month, I need some time to really prepare. For now I'm just too excited about this brand new beauty hanging in our entryway.

Why do I love it? Because secretly my husband and I want to live in a barn. Yup, we're a couple of bales of hay from milking cows over here. What can we say. . .we dig the farmhouse style.

With the new house comes the first real outdoor space we've ever had. . .EVER.
It's been so lovely. I spent a lot of the weekend gazing up at the huge maple tree.
The previous owner was quite the gardener. I'm going to have to start doing some reading if I'm ever going to refer to the flowers by their actual names and not by color. I'll definitely be looking to A Country Farmhouse and The Gardener's Cottage for inspiration.

My, my.

Well it's been a long time friends, and let me go ahead and apologize right off the bat for the radio silence the last several months. There's not much to say except that I've been staying at home with the most delightful not-quite-2-year old on the planet, planning the occasional wedding, and making the move to a new city. Yes, a lot to deal with but not overwhelmingly so. So I suppose another element of it was was that unavoidable feeling that after years of almost exclusively wedding-related blog posts I was stuck in a rut. Yuck.

But now, I'm settling in and enjoying a beautiful spring in Philadelphia and consumed with the new projects of exploring neighborhoods and turning our little house into a lovely home. The change is quite refreshing and gives me the energy to take bon mariage out of hibernation and into a new(ish) direction.

Warning: It's no longer going to be all weddings, all the time over here, k guys?

That being said. . .there is one wedding I'd like to post about. . .

Did you watch? Ughhhhhhhhh, I loved every second. I don't know if I'll ever be officially done consuming all the media coverage. Neither will my daughter. . .this morning when we came downstairs she picked up the remote, handed it to me and said "Princess watch?"

In the four years plus that I've been married, I've become a black-belt at online shopping. No joke. . .some people can bake. . .I can evaluate measurements and fabric quality from screen caps like it's my job. But I do kind of wish I'd been this good back then. . .not to say I would have changed my wedding dress or anything, but I think I would have heavily considered buying my dress online. Particularly if at the time Jason Wu was about to launch an exclusive bridal collection for Net-a-Porter, like he is this January!

Did you hear me? A commoner will marry her prince charming. Literally. It's too good. It's TOO much. I live for this stuff. Plus, I've always found Kate to be ever-the classic and stylish lady, and I expect the big day to deliver on all points.

I spent two happy years living in Haiti as a small child and my family still has friends there today. It's hard to imagine having been there in a time like this.

I took a wrong turn somewhere while searching on Flickr for a picture (movie-star inspiration to prove myself that my new bangs are indeed as glamorous as I think they are). I searched "Reese Witherspoon". Somehow I came across this. . . Ok. Not Reese, but Spanish model Laura Ponte at her 2004 wedding to Luis Beltrán Ataulfo Alfonso Gómez-Acebo y Borbón (son of Infanta Pilar, Duchess of Badajoz, and the nephew of King Juan Carlos I of Spain. Duh.)I just love the simplicity and sleekness of the gown (designed by Miguel Palacio) contrasting with such an intricate veil. Gorgeous.

Tea Time

For those of you that are regular readers, worry not. I'm gearing up folks. The New Year is right around the corner, and although I'm usually not one for resolutions, I think the timing is right: A certain someone wants to be better at a certain something in 2010 (rhymes with clogging). Work and family life have fallen into a rhythm and the prospect of having some time to myself at the end of the day just a few times a week is becoming more and more of a reality. So allow me to stretch those typing muscles once again - after all, it past midnight, the baby's asleep, the dishes have been put away, laundry folded (ok - taken out of the dryer. It's a step in the right direction!) emails have been sent - I have a moment.

Let's talk china. Fine china to be exact. Something I knew nothing about until I started the whole registry process. I remember when we were first registering, my saintly mother-in-law took me to a shop called The Enchanted Owl, where they had pretty much everything under the sun in the world of fine china, silver and crystal. We perused all the sets and patterns, and tried mixing and matching at a table place setting. There were so many gorgeous pieces to choose from, but if you ask me, there was and is nothing like Wedgwood. They really know what they're doing over there. And have for quite some time - this year marks the 250th anniversary of that most revered of fine china houses.
If you're a lover of their elegant and artistic pieces (who isn't?) consider marking the occasion by attending Smithsonian's Wedgwood: 250 Years of Innovation, Artistry, and Timeless Beauty on Saturday, January 9, from 1-5pm at the Daughters of the American Revolution. The morning after

Lots of couples, at least those who can get themselves up early in the morning after a night of dancing til the wee hours (read: NOT ME), choose to have a post-wedding brunch the morning after their wedding, as did actress Ali Larter.
I love the dress and hat. It's so "Mrs.".

If you're more of an early-bird than I am, a next-day brunch can be a wonderful way to thank your guests for helping celebrate your big day, a great excuse to add another LWD to your wardrobe and the perfect honeymoon send-off.

Just a word of advice. . .be sure there's plenty of water and maybe even a Bloody Mary bar around for those guests who don't bounce back quite as quickly.

What makes me believe time and time again, that the couples on The Bachelor/The Bachelorette are going to last? UGH, what makes me even care? Call it a severe addiction to reality television or an over-developed sense of romance. So yeah, you can bet I enjoyed Monday's finale of the Bachelorette (the most dramatic finale ever, by the way), when Jillian Harris and her bachelor of choice Ed "Don't Judge Me on the Fantasy Suite Date" got engaged.

Don't you think it'd be kind of weird to give your second dance as a married woman to your ex boyfriend? Your 83-year-old editor-in-chief of a gentleman's magazine ex-boyfriend?
Apparently Kendra Wilkinson didn't think anything of it when she danced with Hugh Hefner to "As Time Goes By" at her June 27 wedding at the Playboy Mansion.

Personally I couldn't do it. Mainly because I met my husband when I was 18, soooo that list of exes is pretty short. But also, the idea is just plain weird to me. What do you all think, would you invite your ex to your wedding?

I've never been a fan of the whole 'I'm so sorry, it's been so long since I've posted' etc, etc blogger apology. Too many of those and it takes up the whole blog. Don't apologize I always think. . .just post! But I guess it's my turn because where the hell did June go?

Oh that's right, I had a baby. :) (And thanks for all well wishes by the way!). The last four weeks have been an amazing whirlwind of diaper changes, 3 am feedings and that intoxicating baby smell that you just can't get enough of. Silvia is one month old and it's starting to get a bit easier to get some time to myself while she's sleeping. Which she's doing right now. . .shhh.

Well I certainly hope everyone's enjoying the long weekend as much as I am. We spent Saturday lounging by the pool and I devoured the June issue of Vogue, which is just filled with wedding ideas and inspiration. My favorite is Lauren Howell's Mosted Wanted piece. The accessories editor is planning an October wedding on the San Francisco Bay and ever-so-coolly citing inspiration from artist Wayne Thiebaud, she's having friends and relatives (who must have some serious kitchen skills) each make small cakes for the wedding, kind of similar to what we saw this bride do.
It's a great solution if you're having trouble deciding on cake styles and flavors, and what a fun way to keep things whimsical without copying the cupcake trend. While you're being so creative here's a suggestion, why not have a different cake centerpiece for every table? Save on centerpieces and come dessert time guests can help themselves!

It's hilarious to me to think that when I was a kid, I used to hate writing thank-you notes. Literally, my mother would have to sit me down and watch me write note by note if she wanted to to see it get done. If you ask me, there is nothing better than a great family wedding. Denis and Erica were married a few weeks ago, and our whole family had the time of our lives celebrating the night away. I am still coming down after the fabulous time I had at Denis & Erica's wedding this past Saturday. Not only was everything gorgeous (the flowers, the cake - even the weather worked out!), but it was also a blast and we danced until the wee hours.

I'm still gathering up pictures to post for you all, but I couldn't wait to share one thing in particular: The pink and gray color scheme. The bridesmaids wore silver colored dresses and we carried the palest of pink roses. I cannot tell you how much I LOVED this combination, like, I couldn't stop talking about it.

Whereas some of those more practical-type brides opt to have their gown preserved immediately after their wedding, I'm one who has definitely dilly-dallied quite a bit. Like, its been two and half years, and my wedding gown has not once come off of it's hanger and out of it's plastic covering. Truthfully, I just haven't been sure what I'd like to do with the darn thing, and indecision has led to inaction. So when Nina and Cindy each recently asked me about gown preservation, I realized I had to do some actual research.
First, if you didn't already know, gown preservation refers to the special cleaning and packaging methods that ensure a wedding dress maintains it's beauty, shape and color. When a gown is taken to be preserved, a professional will survey it for the materials used, embellishments, and any mishaps or stains, and then formulate a specialized cleaning procedure unique to your gown. After cleaning, your gown is wrapped and placed in a box for keeping. Let's talk dollar bills y'all. You can expect to pay $400-$800, depending on the gown's materials, embellishments and degree of wear and tear.
So how do you find a preservationist? The Knot recommends you start your search early. Before your wedding, ask former brides, your wedding vendors and gown shops for referrals. One word to the wise, lots of dry cleaners will claim to clean wedding gowns, most are not specialized at gown preservation.

Wedding candy bars have become more and more popular in the last few years, but did you know they can also be a great budget-saver? Candies and the means to display them are easily found at low cost, and they are a wonderful way to bring more color and festivity into your wedding reception. Dylan Lauren of Dylan's Candy Bar offers YumSugar readers some tips for hosting a successful candy bar. And because I know you're dying to hear what I have to say on the subject, I've thrown in some tips of my own. . .

Dylan: Include jordan almonds. In Italy, jordan almonds are popular because their egg shape symbolizes fertility and life.

Diana: Yeahhhh, jordan almonds are great and all, popular and traditional at most weddings, but newsflash, they're not the only plain, smooth round candies around. (Now if you're a fan, before you get all huffy, I had them at my wedding too). So include them or don't, but don't forget about your other standbys like M&Ms, Skittles, jellybeans, gum balls, malt balls etc. (Rebecca Thuss)

Dylan: Integrate silver and white candies. For a wedding theme, incorporate white chocolate roses or white petits fours.

First they got married in Mexico. Then when it turned out the wedding wasn't legal, they headed on down to the courthouse, but that didn't quite work out either. Well now they've really gone and done it, for better or for worse, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag officially, spiritually and legally were married this past Saturday. The bride wore a Monique Lhullier dress paired with over 1 million dollars in diamond jewelry. . .
. . .all your favorite Hills characters were there. . .
. . .including one from the Laguna Beach days (yeah I watched that too). . .
. . .and *spoiler alert* looks like Lauren actually showed up!

Strawberry meals forever

Today's doctor-visit was kind of a big deal, as it marked the first time in 35 weeks of pregnancy that I have gained ZERO weight between visits. Zero! That's a pretty extraordinary feat, especially considering pregnancy doesn't encourage the best of eating habits in some, in fact the last thing I ate last night was an enormous piece of pizza at about 10:30 pm.

So needless to say I'm pleased as punch, and to reward myself I've done a little dessert research for you all. Darcy's post from yesterday has reminded me that strawberry season is almost upon us, and what better way to close the meal at a spring or summer wedding then with a delicious strawberry dessert?

It's one of my favorite flavors, and I love how how it gives you a fun element of color to play with. Delish. Recipes and credits below.

Kids, I'm running on empty. For the last few weeks it's been shower, after shower, after shower . . .and it ain't over yet. And although my stamina for high heels is dwindling and I'm running out of dresses I can fit into, there's been a major upside. I'm talking about the sweets people, I've been able to sample lots of sweets. Lots.

There were the chocolate covered-strawberries and bubblegum pink Georgetown Cupcakes at my baby shower (courtesy of BFF 1 and BFF2), the mini cheese-cakes and champagne (cider for me, boo) consumed during a moonlit limo-ride while jamming to Daddy Yanqui, MGMT and Duffy for Erica's bachelorette party, and the adorable tea-and-cake favors we were sent home with after that same gal's bridesmaid-thrown shower at the Tabard Inn. You'd think I'd have had enough by now. You'd be wrong. This past weekend was Erica's second bridal shower thrown by the groom's side of the family. And my stomach was not disappointed.

There were powdered sugar-dusted Lemon Squares. . .

. . .My second dose of Georgetown Cupcake in one week (special ordered in Sunshine and Pastel Pink). . .

. . .pretzels dipped in yumminess. . .

. . .and as if all that wasn't enough, we were sent home with these adorable Wedding Cake Cookies by Beau-coup.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to run. I think the baby's hungry.

Princess for a night

Just got back from Hitched where I dropped of six, count them SIX dresses for their 4th Annual Hitched Dress Drive to benefit Princess for a Night. Including three bridesmaid dresses and, wait for it people, the dress I wore to my junior prom. My JUNIOR prom. Eleven years ago. Seriously what the hell was that still doing in my closet?
During the month of April, Hitched invites you to bring by your old bridesmaid dresses and donate them to students in our community who might otherwise not be able to afford a dress for prom night. And my bet is that like me, you have at least a couple of similar dresses gathering dust and taking up space in your closet.

Their goal is to collect one hundred dresses - they only have 94 more to go!

One of my good friends, Erin, will be getting married this summer and I'm so excited for her - it's going to be a beautiful wedding. Unfortunately the wedding is right around the time the little one is due, so I won't be able to be there in person, but I will be in spirit!

Erin's been trying to figure out just what song to dance to with her dear old dad on the big day and I think that's a tough one for most brides. In most cases you and your dad don't have 'a song' the way you and your future hubby do. And let's face it, you hear a lot of the same cheesy father-daughter songs over and over at weddings.

So what's a bride to do? Well first of all, if the dance is important to you don't leave making your choice until the last possible second. . .by the end of the planning process you'll have made so many decisions, you'll be ready to say yes to the first song you think of. Secondly, just remember there are no rules. . .it doesn't have to be traditional, it doesn't have to be classic, it doesn't have to literally sing about a father-daughter relationship, and it doesn't even have to be a slow song. It's about you and your dad - pick something you'll love to spin around to.

I had the best time working with Cindy and Keith on their wedding this past Saturday, and while I was there I noticed a trend. Me, I tend to just brave through the low temperatures in tights, but these ladies got me thinking of trying something new. All you need is a great silhouette. . . .

It's the first day of Spring! And yeah ok, maybe you can't really tell it is by looking out the window just yet, but that doesn't stop me from looking forward to flowers, flowers everywhere. Right now I'm incredibly inspired by Brooklyn-based florist Saipua and her whimsical sense of design.Her arrangements are sophisticated yet anything but stuffy, with that 'freshly picked from a countryside meadow' look about them.

It's not often that I see a DC-shout out on Darcy Miller's Bride's Guide, but today I did! Check out the picture below from bride Jenn and and groom Martyn's November 8th wedding. The pair were married at All Souls Unitarian Church and held their reception Harman Center for the Arts. Since both places are conveniently located on the yellow and green lines, instead of hiring transportation or expecting guests to fend for themselves, Jenn and Martyn gave their guests Metro passes and hopped on the train.
Guests and wedding party saved gas and money by commuting together. Photographer, Kate Headley snapped this shot in between stops.
